The University awarded a contract for medical implants and ancillaries.
The medical implants and ancillaries offered by Globus Medical are screws, rods, plates, spacers and cages that are used in spine fusion procedures. These procedures treat degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, trauma, and tumors. The advantages includes less disruption, less surgical time, less recovery time, as well as availability of implants to fit the patient's anatomy, making the surgery less complicated and much safer for the patient.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The surgical implants provided by Globus Medical, Incorporated have to do with direct patient care service. Without these types of patient implants the hospital will not be able to provide this type of procedure and a patient will go elsewhere which will result in a loss of revenue.
