The University awarded a contract for an Electron Microscope.
The purchase for TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope) and JSM-IT500HRLV SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) are necessary to replace the JEOL JSM-6320F FESEM, and the JEOL JEM-1220 life science TEM, both of which are 22 years old and have reached the end of their useful lives. Instrumental support is essential for grant applications for faculty in UIC. With the new capabilities of the two new instruments, EMC RRC will continue to provide high quality instrumental support to grant application and on going research projects. New Field emission SEM will enable users to carry out in-situ measurements inside of the SEM chamber especially deformation behavior of advanced materials.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) It will not only spark innovative ideas for students and faculty in College of Medicine and Biological Sciences but also encourage new users from Engineering and LAS to investigate materials that require low dose imaging such as graphene liquid cells and battery materials. New Field emission SEM will enable users to carry out in-situ measurements inside of the SEM chamber especially deformation behavior of advanced materials. New EBSD detector will allow mapping of crystallography orientations of specimens such as solar cell materials
