The University awarded a contract for Abecma.
Abecma (CAR-T therapy) is for treating multiple myeloma.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Abecma is CAR-T therapy for multiple myeloma. It is the only CAR-T therapy commercially available to treat this condition. UI Health currently has several patients who are candidates for Abecma. If this therapy is not made available, these patients will need to seek care at a different institution in order to receive this product.
