The University awarded a contract for hip and knee implants.
Zimmer US Incorporated provides implants for hip and knee joint replacement and reconstruction surgeries. The components used in hip and knee replacements include screws, bits, sockets, and the ball and stem for hip replacements. In contrast, knee replacements typically consist of femoral, tibial, and patellar components.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Zimmer US, Inc. implants are essential for direct patient care. Without access to these implants, the hospital cannot offer certain orthopedic procedures. Consequently, the University will be unable to perform these procedures, causing patients to seek care elsewhere. This, in turn, will result in a loss of revenue for the University.
