The University awarded a contract for medical waste management services.
This exemption is for medical waste management services for the collection and removal of sharps, hazardous waste, pharmaceuticals, and regulated medical waste from the Specialty Care Building. They will handle the collection and off-site transportation of these materials for proper disposal. It is essential to remove medical waste and sharps containers from the hospital to prevent the spread of infections, protect healthcare workers and the public, and ensure compliance with regulations.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Waste management services are essential for direct patient care. Without access to these services, the hospital cannot offer patient care and safety. Consequently, the University will be unable to perform patient care, causing patients to seek care elsewhere. This, in turn, will result in a loss of revenue for the University.
