Request for Professional Services Qualifications (QBS): IGB Advanced Microscopy & Diagnostics Facility

First published Tuesday, October 21, 2025
Project Description
The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois (University) is seeking a Professional Services Consultant (PSC) team for the IGB Advanced Microscopy & Diagnostics Facility.

A feasibility study was conducted to determine the programmatic needs for the IGB Advanced Microscopy & Diagnostics Facility to pursue an National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant that was awarded in September 2025. This project will begin with PSC program confirmation (space and floor plans) with NIH and the University stakeholders and adjust the programming needs as required. The project will continue with the schematic design and design development phases to determine the project scope, schedule, and cost. Following the schematic design phase, the project will seek design approval from the Board of Trustees. With the University of Illinois Board of Trustees' approval, it is also the Universitys intent to utilize the same PSC for the remainder of the project for design of construction documents, bid & award, construction administration, and warranty phases. The feasibility report is available on the FTP site.

The proposed Advanced Microscopy & Diagnostic Core (AMD) at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will comprise a 4,830 gross square foot subgrade building addition and the connection to the adjacent existing facility. This expansion will be designed to accommodate vibration-sensitive microscopy laboratories, wet labs, diagnostic labs, and support spaces, including quiet rooms and utility infrastructure. The project will integrate advanced imaging technologies such as confocal microscopes, MERFISH, STEDYCON, and a multibeam SEM, alongside essential laboratory equipment and infrastructure for biological and chemical research. The design will emphasize modular planning, accessibility, and adaptability, ensuring future flexibility in laboratory configurations and equipment installations. The facility will meet BSL-2 standards and incorporate robust safety, containment protocols, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems required to support 24-hours, 7 day a week research operations without disruption.

Project Location: Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB), 1206 W Gregory Dr, Urbana, IL 61801
