The University of Illinois Animal Care Program oversees seven research units that require contact bedding for laboratory rodents. To minimize experimental variability and maintain the highest standards of animal health and welfare, the University mandates the use of bedding that meets consistent and superior quality standards across all facilities. This project focuses on ensuring bedding quality by addressing critical risk factors, including contamination, excessive dust, and improper substrate storage. Each of these factors poses a potential threat to animal well-being and may compromise the integrity and reproducibility of research data which are not acceptable. By enforcing strict quality controls and uniform standards, the initiative supports reliable research outcomes while promoting optimal living conditions for laboratory animals
