The University awarded a contract for CAR-T therapy drug, Abecma.
Abecma is an immunological treatment that uses the body's own immune system to destroy cancerous cells. This treatment is used as a last option for patients who have failed previous cancer treatment.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Without this drug, the Hospital will not be able to provide care for the patients and will lose revenue.
