The University awarded a contract for Titan Spine Spinal Impants.
Titan Spine Spinal Implants are used in treating degenerative spine disease. Degenerative spine disease is a conditions which involves the gradual loss of normal structure and function of the spine over time. They are usually caused by aging, but may also be the result of tumors, infections, trauma or arthritis, spinal stenosis, scoliosis and herniated disk. Pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots caused by degeneration can be caused by: Slipped or herniated discs. Spinal surgery calls for a variety of plates, cages or screws that are attached to part of the backbone, allowing the spine to be surgically straightened or corrected.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Titan Spine Spinal Implants have to do with direct patient care. Without the Titan Spine Spinal Implants the hospital would not be able to offer spinal fusion procedures, which in turn would drive patients elsewhere and a loss in revenue to the hospital.
