The University awarded a contract for mental health and psychological services.
Sports performance, mental health and psychological services for UIC student-athletes, coaches and staff. Services include: one-on-one consultation, game and practice preparation training, injury counseling, team sessions, and leadership development.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Mental health is as important. The counseling provided to UIC athletes is extremely helpful in all aspects, including but not limited to mental health issues such as depression, isolation, on-line class behavior management, etc. Providing this service to student-athletes is mandatory per NCAA policies and not doing so would create a violation for the department as well as being a disservice to the students.
