The University awarded a contract for coronary angioplasty equipment and supplies.
The medical equipment provided by Abiomed Incorporated is used in coronary angioplasty procedures. During coronary angioplasty the Abiomed Impella Pump system is used to help pump blood to the patients heart during coronary angioplasty procedure. The Impella pump system consists of a pump, catheter, guide wire and ancillaries.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The surgical implant and supplies provided by Abiomed Incorporated medical supplies have to do with direct patient care service. Without this type of patient implants the hospital will not be able to provide this type of procedure and a patient will go else where and intern we will take a loss in revenue.
