The University awarded a contract for coronary and peripheral vascular supplies.
Getinge will provide coronary and peripheral vascular disposable medical supplies and implants such as Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts. Coronary artery bypass grafting, also called heart bypass surgery, is a medical procedure to improve blood flow to the heart. It may be needed when the arteries supplying blood to the heart, called coronary arteries, are narrowed or blocked. During coronary artery bypass surgery, the surgeon removes a piece of blood vessel from the leg, chest, arm, or belly. Then, the surgeon uses that piece of blood vessel to reroute blood around the blocked artery. The surgery is called "bypass surgery" because it bypasses the blockage.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Without these grafts, the surgeon would not be able to perform the necessary procedure on the patient. Without these grafts the surgeon would have to move the case to a different hospital resulting in a loss of revenue for the organization.
