The University awarded a contract for implants and accessories.
This purchase is for implants and accessories used in complex surgical cases. These thoracic, mandibular and craniomaxillofacial products are preferred by UIH surgeons in thoracic, plastic, neurosurgical, and reconstructive surgical cases. Biomet implants are used in about 80% of these types of surgical cases. The implants are used in conjunction with proprietary software for planning and guiding the complex procedures.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The implants and accessories provided by Biomet Microfixation are essential for patient care and particular surgical procedures. Without these implants, surgical services could not provide this patient care, which could result in revenue loss for the hospital.
