The University awarded a contract for human leukocyte antigen matching.
The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) provides HLA (human leukocyte antigen) matching for transplant patients. These services will connect patients in urgent need of life-saving bone marrow transplants with unrelated donors. NMDP is a diverse international registry for potential stem cell transplant donors.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) HLA (human leukocyte antigen) matching is pivotal to transplant success. Without these services, we will not be able to perform life-saving transplants, resulting in patients going elsewhere. This would result in a loss of revenue for the hospital.
