The University awarded a contract for two servers for research.
This exemption is for two servers, each with a state-of-the-art Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) cluster to be used for AI workloads and HIPAA-compliant research. This includes a three year hardware warranty with Lambda technical support covering hardware issues.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) These servers will provide needed resources for computationally-intensive AI models and analyes for a variety of health-related research projects and applications at scales that our current resources do not support.
