The University awarded a contract for orthopedic implants and accessories.
This exemption is for the purchase of orthopedic implants and accessories used in various procedures involving the shoulder, ankle, elbow, knees and hips. Items consist of screws, anchors, wires, plates, sutures, burrs, punches, kits and ancillaries. The products are used in orthopedic stability procedures, soft tissue repairs and arthroscopic diagnostic procedures.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Arthrex is one of the most common orthopedic supply and implant vendors used by UI Hospital surgeons due to proven clinical outcomes and strong surgeon preference. Orthopedic surgeries are an important part of the Hospital's Orthopedic service line and the overall Hospital strategic plan. Without access to these implants and accessories, we will not be able to perform certain procedures. This will result in a loss of revenue for the hospital.
