The University awarded a contract for Hologic Sentimag supplies and disposables.
The SentiMag device, part of the Sentimag system, is a probe used to detect magnetic markers in the body, enabling surgeons to locate and remove impalpable breast lesions or sentinel lymph node. The supplies and disposables consist of Magseeds - a small, magnetic seed used to mark the location of breast tumors and Magtrace - a magnetic lymphatic tracer used in sentinel lymph node biopsy for breast cancer patients. The request also includes a five-year service contract for the Sentimag machines.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Without access to these breast biopsy devices and ancillaries, the Hospital would not be able to deliver proper care to patients under the University's care, which would drive patients elsewhere and result in a loss of revenue to the Hospital.
