The University awarded a contract for Omnicell Pharmacy Carousel and ancillaries.
The Omnicell Pharmacy Carousel utilizes vertical storage and retrieval technology to consolidate the medication footprint. Having medications closer together reduces the distance technicians have to travel during picking and stocking operations. This purchase includes the removal of an older carousel and obtaining new printers, bar code scanners, and software.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The efficiencies gained from having the carousels are significant. Additional staff would be needed to do the functions provided by the carousels if we did not have them. The carousels are driven by bar code technology which provides a level of accuracy and safety when compared to traditional pulling of medications by hand from open bins.
