The University awarded a contract for orthopedic implants, instruments and accessories.
This exemption is for the purchase of orthopedic implants, instruments and accessories used in procedures involving the shoulder, ankle, elbow, knees and hips. These items consist of screws, anchors, wires, plates, sutures, burrs, punches, and kits. They are used in joint replacement surgery, arthroscopic procedures, and soft tissue repairs. These items are also used with the vendor's proprietary orthopedic robotic platform.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical at a university-operated health care center or dispensary that provides care, treatment, and medications for students, faculty and staff (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) We would be unable to use the Smith & Nephew CORI robot platform, which requires the vendor's instruments and accessories. This would lead to surgeries and procedures being canceled resulting in a loss in revenue for the hospital.
