The University awarded a contract for sequencing reagents.
The Sequencing Core owns and operates three Illumina Sequencing instruments, the MiniSeq, MiSeq and NextSeq. All of these instruments are exclusive to Illumina and all reagents are sold by Illumina only. The SQC instrumentation is to serve the needs of UIC faculty and researchers, with a focus on next-generation sequencing. Due to rapid changes in NGS sequencing technology, the SQC partners with other facilities to provide users with the most advanced sequencing instrumentation. The SQC is looking to improve automation at the next-generation sequencing library preparation step (i.e. converting total genomic DNA and total RNA to sequencer-ready molecules) to increase throughput and reproducibility.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) Illumnia sequencing reagents are only available from Illumnia for the three Next Generation sequencers in service at the SQC core including the NextSeq 500, MiSeq and MiniSeq.
