This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) The prosthetic devices that the Boston Foundation for Sight manufacture utilize U.S. patented spine technology to create devices that can be uniquely designed to fit each person's individual eye. The mathematical description of contours using spine functions that are integral to the foundation design to fit (DFT) CAD/CAM system allow prosthetic devices to be created for almost indefinite variable shapes with smooth transitions between zones. No other company has this type of patented design technology or the nanoform ultra high accuracy lathes to create prosthetic devices for the eye that can give a patient the degree of comfort or the precision of fit needed for the treatment to be highly successful.
