The University awarded a contract for microscale thermophoresis instrument.
The state-of-the-art technology will enable the monitoring of interactions between macromolecules and small molecules (i.e. ligands, drugs, and drug candidates) in solution that is based on microscale thermophoresis (MST) will be obtained. MST is a non-invasive method that relies on small quantities of samples and can be rapidly optimized for various systems.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for performing sponsored research and other sponsored activities under grants and contracts funded by the sponsor or by sources other than State appropriations. (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b)(8)) Nanotemper is the only maker and seller of this particular technology instrument. There are analogous platforms to those currently owned by UIC (e.g. SPR and caloimetry), but there are no alternative vendors, makers, and suppliers for MST.
