The University awarded a contract for Photrexa Kit-A.
Photrexa Kit-A kit used for remodeling the cornea of the eye, when it has become damaged due to progressive keratoconus.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Avedro is the only vendor that supplies these kits. They are not available elsewhere and they do not offer discounts off of the standard market price of $2932.50 per kit. We consider the price to be reasonable based on our knowledge of the market and lack of alternative products. One kit is usually sufficient to remodel one cornea. My estimated funding needed allows for growth in this cutting edge technology.
