The University awarded a contract for a Heart-Lung Machine.
The S5 Heart-Lung Machine affords easy interaction and visibility of the system during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures.
This purchase is exempt from the usual selection processes of the Procurement Code because the procurement expenditure is for medical supplies or medical services necessary for the delivery of care and treatment at medical, dental, or veterinary teaching facilities utilized by SIU or U of I (30 ILCS 500 / 1-13(b-5)) Our current Heart/Lung machine, the Getinge HL20, malfunctioned. The LivaNova is the only other machine the hospital has and was needed when the Getinge malfunctioned. The Getinge has discontinued sale of the HL20 Heart Lung Machine and service support will end 12/31/21. It is critical to have a second machine as a backup in case the current instrument should malfunction and the LivaNova has been proven effective in saving lives.
